I rate films based solely on how much I like them. Therefore, the ratings I assign films do not necessarily reflect their objective quality. Of course, the idea of "objective quality" is completely absurd to begin with. If something is good to me, that's all that matters.

In film, atmosphere and tone are above all else to me (this largely concerns visuals). I judge films based primarily on how they make me feel. In most cases, the importance of "the plot" is miniscule. Having a good story is one thing, but a filmmaker has to be able to tell it an interesting way to make a quality film. Therefore, films that serve to merely tell stories don't often score well with me. Examples of atmosphere I enjoy: The Fearless Vampire Killers, McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Port of Shadows, A Clockwork Orange, Black Narcissus.

I believe that art is masturbation. That is, I believe that art is (or perhaps should be) made for no purpose other than to serve its maker. This is why I have a tough time with the word "indulgent" being used as a criticism. A filmmaker should be indulgent - that is what makes his or her films genuine. On the other hand, whether or not I enjoy that filmmaker's indulgences is another matter.

I do not consider "pointless" to be a valid criticism. What point does a film have to have other than the filmmaker's desire to make it?

My favorite/most admired/most respected filmmaker and what he has to say about film:

"A film is - or should be - more like music than like fiction. It should be a progression of moods and feelings. The theme, what's behind the emotion, the meaning, all that comes later."

"A filmmaker has almost the same freedom as a novelist has when he buys himself some paper."

"If it can be written, or thought, it can be filmed."

"Perhaps it sounds ridiculous, but the best thing that young filmmakers should do is to get hold of a camera and some film and make a movie of any kind at all."

"The screen is a magic medium. It has such power that it can retain interest as it conveys emotions and moods that no other art form can hope to tackle."

-Stanley Kubrick
